Friends, I hate having to ask for help. This pregnancy has brought me to my knees… literally. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of hyperemesis gravidarum (or HG). I hadn’t. I didn’t know it was the condition that resulted in bed rest for Kate Middleton and Amy Schumer. I didn’t pay attention.
All I knew was I was pregnant and I was excited. HG changed everything. I am 15 weeks pregnant - I have been aware of it for 11 weeks. 10 of those weeks have been the longest of my life. I can’t imagine the next 25 at the rate I am going. My care hasn’t yet evolved to the most extreme but I think I am headed there based on the past couple of weeks. Because I am asking for support I am not going to spare you the juicy details.
HG means…
First it means that I’ve considered a therapeutic termination. An abortion. For this very wanted pregnancy. Some days I still do consider. I count the weeks until I waited too long to make that decision. If I can just get there. The only way is forward. I know I won’t be ok if I make that choice.
I spend a lot of time hugging the toilet. In the past 24 hours it’s been every time I eat. As soon as I finish chewing on a couple of cases.
It means my husband has to do a suppository medicine on me once per day. I get to do the other one.
It means that I barely have the energy to care for myself every day. I spend as much time as I can in bed, asleep, spaced out. It means my spouse does everything for me so I can drag myself to work everyday… well some days.
It means my sick time is gone. My vacation time is running low. It means I am scared.
It means needles. It’s been a while since I’ve needed IV fluids. Today is one of those days though. If this progresses, I will need a home health nurse or a PICC line.
HG means my depression is at an all time high. Yesterday I was worried I was going to need to go to the hospital for my mental health. I have no joy. Every second of every day is a fight.
So my ask…
It’s not uncommon for people to lose or need to leave their jobs for HG. I am not prepared for this financially. But it’s a reality that stares me in the face more directly each day. I am the breadwinner in our home, our new home that we just bought. I need the funds to get us through my pregnancy and my maternity leave.
I am scared but I know I am not alone. I appreciate any help whether you share or donate. I can also take funds @/miajackman on Venmo, $/miajackman on CashApp, and at mia.j.jackman@/gmail.com on Paypal and can add those to my goals on this site. Thank you.
